I can go venture to less friendly terrain then, I don't have to worry about landing close to roads etc, as I can pretty much always hike out with my wing in the backpack. That means my flights are more fun, I can concentrate on the actual flying rather than checking for possible landing zones all the time. I really cherish the ability to land in very tight spots on a paraglider. But above all, during a hang gliding flight, you. More aerodynamic, it moves quickly: it can reach 100 km/h compared to 40 km/h for the paraglider. The hang-glider, on the other hand, has a V-shaped metal structure to which the wing is attached.

And the landing zone is full of clueless PG pilots packing their gear in the middle of the meadow :P With the paraglider, you will be comfortably seated on a sort of harness in front of your instructor. You're coming in fast and you need a lot of space. I think the most important limitation that puts me off hang-gliding (for me personally) is the relative difficulty of landings. However, the difficulty of the hang-glider logistics could mean that you get a lot less flight hours even though your range of flyable conditions will be greater in theory. You could go flying in stronger conditions on a hang-glider, theoretically. Unrealistic, but still it would indicate something, right? I know it always depends on a lot of variables, but lets say in no-wind-whatsoever-condition. The FAI Hang Gliding and Paragliding Commission (CIVL) conducts FAI's hang gliding and paragliding activities, in particular World Records and International Competitions. The bigger factor for me would be to stay up as long as possible. Is it always the paraglider? All i can find is the glide-ration which frankly is not that important for me. Whats the better device (paraglider vs hang glider) to stay up longer in those situations.

I have talked to some paragliders and they told me that their average flight there is about 25 minutes, but some flights much longer, depending on finding thermal updrafts. The land around it is very flat and easy to land, so it should be great for learning anyway. It's a plateau that is about 8km x 2,5km wide and 500m tall. In german it's called the "Hohe Wand", which translates to "Tall Wall". I live in Vienna and I would do most of my flights on a small wall about 40km south of Vienna. The great people in hang-gliding I really miss - but kitesurfing also has a good camaradary borne of a sort of pioneering spirit and dependance on each other to get on the water and. I am pretty set on hang gliding now, even with all the limitations it brings (weight, set-up-time, can't take it with me on airline-flights, etc.). (Paraglider performance is also now at a level where nice safe 'DHV1-2' gliders perform at the same glide ratio of my old Kiss top performace hang-glider of 1990. I have always thought about picking up a freeflying sport and this year i may have time and money to finally start for real. Hang gliders are dismounted into 2-meter packages that are easy to place into a baggage hold of any plane, bus, train, elevator cabin.
